北宋真宗年间，翰轩书院院正千金秦香莲因国色天香、才艺双全名震均州城。官宦商贾纷纷上门提亲，秦父却一心要让女儿嫁作王妃。当朝太师之子庞虎逼婚，秦香莲不慎落水，顺江而下被书生陈世美所救。在陈世美的陪同下，已然失忆的秦香莲回城寻亲，路遇流落民间的昭阳公主赵昭。秦陈二人情投意合，更发现彼此原是青梅竹马，单恋的赵昭不时暗使奸计。均州城中，秦香莲要帮助陈世美进入翰轩书院，要保护这一段纯净的爱情，同时还须顾及秦府与父母安危……庞虎等人频频施难，陈世美蒙冤入狱。最终，秦香莲竟不惜自毁名节，法场救“夫”，与秦父三击掌反出家门，嫁入陈家。一夜之间，身份陡转，秦香莲拼命掩饰悲痛，陈母对贤良淑德的秦香莲分外满意。岂料二人婚后，陈母才得知秦父竟是杀夫仇人。秦香莲一心操持家务，侍奉婆母，陈母却要将秦香莲赶出家门。善良的陈母欲以伤害自己来达到目的，却让儿子儿媳伤得更深。秦香莲无意...。The subtitle of Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet’s first feature, from 1965, “Only Violence Helps Where Violence Reigns,” suggests the fierce political program evoked by their rigorous aesthetic. The pretext of the film, set in Cologne, is Heinrich Böll’s novel “Billiards at Half Past Nine,” which they strip down to a handful of stark events and film with a confrontational angularity akin to Bartók’s music that adorns the soundtrack. The subtlest of cues accompany the story’s complex flashbacks. The middle-aged Robert Fähmel tells a young hotel bellhop of persecutions under the Third Reich| his elderly father, Heinrich, an architect famed for a local abbey, recalls the militarism of the First World War, when his wife, Johanna, incurred trouble for insulting the Kaiser. A third-generation Fähmel is considering architecture, just as the exiled brother of Robert’s late wife, returns, only to be met by their former torturer, now a West German official taking part in a celebratory parade of war veterans. Straub and Huillet make the layers of history live in the present tense, which they judge severely. The tamped-down acting and the spare, tense visual rhetoric suggest a state of moral crisis as well as the response—as much in style as in substance—that it demands.。
